VTL February Event – Budgeting Best Practices

Friday, January 20th, 2012

After that last VTL meeting, there was a lot of discussion about changing up our format a little.  The idea is to balance our “presentation” model with a more round-table, peer-learning model.

By popular demand (believe it or not) our first topic will be developing an IT budget.  With it being early in 2012, this is very timely.  (more…)

Vancouver Technology Leaders Fall 2011 Update

Monday, August 29th, 2011

It’s been a great summer, but with the coming of September, it’s time to get back to work!  I’ve been busy in the background planning several things for the Vancouver Technology Leaders.

Event Management

Linkedin is terrible for managing events.  I’m currently considering moving the group over to Meetup.com for their much more powerful event management interface.  There’s a minor cost ($60/year) to use their system, but I think it will more than be worth it for simplicity.  The downside is that people will need a meetup.com account to RSVP for events.  Yes, yet ANOTHER account.

Linkedin would still be used for verification (a link to your linkedin profile would be required to join).

If anyone has comments or thoughts, please let me know!

April Vancouver Technology Leaders Meeting – Apr 20th

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

Join the Vancouver Technology Leaders for our April event.  After the last couple spectacular roundtable-discussion meetings, this one will be a simpler open meeting.

As an ice breaker, there will be two questions to cover during your introduction.  The goal is to create opportunities for conversations and relationships within the team.

1.  What major projects am I working on in the next 6 months?

2.  What are my weaknesses (where do I need help)?

Where and When

Wednesday, April 20th 2011 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm
Location is in the Vancouver Technology Leaders discussion.  You must be a member to attend!

The group will be ordering pizza and soft drinks, and sharing the bill (probably around $10 per person).  Please let me know if you’d like to participate.

RSVPs are required.  Attendance is limited to members of the Vancouver Technology Leaders group on Linkedin.  Want to join?  Click here.

VTL Meeting Recap – What Successful Leaders Do with John Hughes @cio2ceo

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

Last weeks’ Vancouver Technology Leaders meeting with John Hughes was a huge success.  Over a dozen attendees attendees spent the evening discussing successful leadership strategies with John. If you haven’t done so already, go grab yourself a copy of John’s book, Haunting the CEO, and follow him on Twitter (@CIO2CEO).

Watching the way the group interacted was especially important for me.  Everyone, from the newest leader to the most senior, was involved in the conversation and clearly had many takeaways.  The meeting highlighted the value of our group and the importance of peer mentoring.

I can’t wait for our future meetings and to continue to broaden our group.  New or emerging leaders – don’t be afraid to join us!

Thank you all.
