We all make jokes at Microsoft’s expense.  I’m firmly a Microsoft person (in the technical world, not in the innovation world), and I’m no exception to that rule.  It’s great to hear Linus Torvalds, one of the creators of Linux accurately describe the hatred of Microsoft “a disease”.

How Good is your Disaster Recovery Plan?

Every company does a different level of disaster recovery and business continuity planning.  That’s completely appropriate – smaller companies with less technology dependency (and process maturity) do not require as thorough of a disaster recovery plan.

This past week I’ve been dealing with a very challenging disaster scenario.

The company in question is reasonably technology dependent, but not very sophisticated (lots of data, few automated processes, not a complex technology environment).  They have a solid backup system, a proper GFS rotation which includes off-site storage, and plenty of spare hardware in case of a major failure.  They’re doing everything correctly for a company of their sophistication.

Vipre Enterprise Lenovo Laptop Issues

This is a posting not about failure, but about the importance of excellent customer service. 

Last week one of my clients had several Lenovo laptops fail (BSOD) due to a bad anti-virus definition file in Vipre Antivirus.  The definition file considered the drivers for the hard drive to be rogue security software and quarantined them, causing the boot drive to be unreadable by Windows.  There’s a full write-up about the problem here and a solution thread here.

For us, the problem wasn’t wide-spread – it only affected a handful laptops (other users clearly don’t reboot that often!).  Of course, this happened at the worst possible time for the client – during a due diligence meeting.  At least two of the laptops involved belonged to people who were in those meetings.  Unfortunately some of the other laptops were in other remote locations and had to be shipped back to Vancouver, but that’s another story.
