Wanted: Experienced IT professional for part time work.

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

We’re growing!

We provide IT support services to several small and medium sized companies. Business is growing and we need an additional part-time consultant to support the growing client base. Unlike traditional consultants, we work as a part time member of the clients own team and take full ownership for our clients systems.  That way they can feel confident that they’re receiving all the support they need, not just when they need a project done or have a serious problem.

We’re focused on providing the best support experience to our clients.  As such, the consultant we’re looking for will have 3+ years of user and server support experience, strong technical skills and be highly motivated.  Exceptional people and communications skills and a must.

Apart from the standard range of Windows and networking skills, my clients require the following technical skills:
 * Windows 2000 Server, 2003 Server and Small Business Server
 * Veritas (symantec) Backup Exec
 * Active Directory
 * Exchange Server 2003

Other desireable skills include:
 * Mac OSX
 * Blackberry
 * Microsoft Sharepoint
 * Antivirus, antispam and antispyware products
 * Basic Web design
 * Software development
 * Linux or other flavours of Unix

Initially working an expected 5-10 hours a week, the number of working hours and the complexity of the projects will grow as you prove your ability.  This position will require both on-stie and off-site work, during and outside normal business hours.

Please e-mail your resume and a cover letter with your hourly rate expectations to mike @ tech-services.ca with “Part-time IT Consultant” in the subject line.  No phone calls please.

NOTE:  This job is in Vancouver, BC.  Telecommuting is not an option.

Busy!

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

I don’t know if other consultants are finding this, but it seems that things are booming here in Vancouver.

Other than a couple days on the Oregon Coast earlier this month, I have barely managed a single day off this summer.  So much for my plans of taking it easy and recharging.

It’s so busy, that I’ve had to neglect this site.  I’ve run into lots of interesting technology challenges, but haven’t had the time to post any of them.

I’ll try to do better soon.  Really.

Blackberry Outbound E-Mail Issues

Saturday, August 12th, 2006

This is something I’ve run into many times.  User has a Blackberry (using the webclient).  Everything works fine, then one day their outgoing e-mails stop sending and (eventually) out a nasty red X beside them.

Generally, this is a problem with the service books on the unit.  Most of the time, it’s because a service book has been corrupted.  I have run into it, or problems like it, when the user reinstalled the desktop software and mistakenly selected “Desktop Redirector” instead of Webclient.

The solution is pretty simple:

1. Delete the service books from the Blackberry.
2. Log into the web client and click “Resend Service Books”.

Easy huh?  When a crackberry addict has been without outbound e-mail for a couple hours, it’ll definitely make you look like a hero!
