TinyTwitter for Blackberry Network Issues

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Be careful if you’re running TinyTwitter on your Blackberry.  Once you’ve started the program, it continues to connect to the data network in the background, even if you aren’t updating.  I ran into something like 20 megs/day of data usage, just because TinyTwitter was running in the background (and not even being used!).

This sounds like a pretty serious bug.  Even more serious if you’re not on an unlimited data plan!

ASP issues with Exchange 2007 on Windows Server 2003 64 bit.

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

I have been setting up Exchange Server 2007 for a client this weekend. Everything has been proceeding fairly smoothly, until I tried to test out Outlook Web Access. When going to the server from my browser, I would receive a “Service Unavailable” message.

Event Log gave much more information, thankfully:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: W3SVC-WP
Event Category: None
Event ID: 2274
Date: 3/2/2008
Time: 3:18:41 PM
User: N/A
Computer: xxxxxxxxxx
Description:
ISAPI Filter ‘c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\\aspnet_filter.dll’ could not be loaded due to a configuration problem. The current configuration only supports loading images built for a AMD64 processor architecture. The data field contains the error number. To learn more about this issue, including how to troubleshooting this kind of processor architecture mismatch error, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=29349.

The link didn’t help at all. Searching for “W3SVC-WP 2274″ on Microsoft’s support site also didn’t help. Thankfully, Google saves the day.

The fix is quite simple. Follow the directions in this link and OWA should start to work properly again.

Update:  This is a known issue when Blackberry Enterprise Server is installed on the same box.  See this link.

BlackBerry Server Express!

Sunday, October 15th, 2006

In the midst of the whirlwind that has been the past few weeks, I found a great tasty morsel – Rim has released a “free” version of the Blackberry Enterprise Server.

This is fantastic news for many of my clients.  Most of them are small, highly connected businesses.  And yes, they ALL use Blackberries.  Being able to sync their calendars and contacts in real time would be like Christmas for them.

Blackberry Enterprise Server Express is free and includes 1 client.  You can purchase up to 14 more clients ($519 for a 5 pack) up to the limit of 15 clients.  If you outgrow it, there is an upgrade path to their bigger versions.

I think I’m already lined up for 3 installs of this in the next month or two.  Should be fun!

Blackberry Outbound E-Mail Issues

Saturday, August 12th, 2006

This is something I’ve run into many times.  User has a Blackberry (using the webclient).  Everything works fine, then one day their outgoing e-mails stop sending and (eventually) out a nasty red X beside them.

Generally, this is a problem with the service books on the unit.  Most of the time, it’s because a service book has been corrupted.  I have run into it, or problems like it, when the user reinstalled the desktop software and mistakenly selected “Desktop Redirector” instead of Webclient.

The solution is pretty simple:

1. Delete the service books from the Blackberry.
2. Log into the web client and click “Resend Service Books”.

Easy huh?  When a crackberry addict has been without outbound e-mail for a couple hours, it’ll definitely make you look like a hero!
